	<description>
American singles are in no rush
Most of us who have yet to tie the knot in this great country of ours cannot even imagine a time when we would have been considered spinsters or eternal bachelors. It has become so much of the norm now to put off marriage that the average marriage age from even two decades ago seems to us to be much too young. In fact, singles now account for a record 40% of adults in the US. making them one of America's fastest growing groups.

The number of those of us singles who have never been married has doubled in less than 30 years. Almost 21 million Americans between the ages of 25 and 44 have never taken that walk down the proverbial aisle. And that adds up to more than 1/3 of the people between the ages of 25 and 34 and 16% of those between the ages of 35 and 44. One source suggests that only China and India have more singles than we can boast!

No more singles taboo
There are many reasons for this phenomenon, one being that we simply live longer than we used to, but that still does not account for the steep increase in singles in such a short time. The answer, instead, lies in a collective change in attitude. Marriage is not seen anymore as one of those things that one must do and at a certain age. More and more people want to further their career and have a good sized nest egg before they become responsible for a growing family. Once upon a time marriages followed shortly after mandatory schooling had finished, particularly for women. many of us were groomed from a young age to be a wife or a husband. Now, these kinds of roles have broken down considerably and singles know that they can make their own choices and wait until they feel the time is right.
